Three vaccinations against the coronavirus are about to be approved and the first doses could be administered in a few weeks. Countries around Austria are using this outlook to prepare themselves. Spain is defining 13,000 vaccination stations, Germany is securing millions of doses, Italy is deciding who will be vaccinated first. The goal: to get started in a structured manner as soon as the vaccine is available.
In Austria, politicians are discussing the point in time when vaccination could theoretically be carried out. While Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) was still cautiously talking about the “first quarter” of 2021 at the weekend, Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) concretized on Monday: “We will have a few 100,000 doses in the course of January. The corresponding logistics are in preparation. The actual start will be determined by the marketing authorization”.
Details will be presented on Wednesday
The finished vaccination plan will be discussed on Wednesday in the Austrian Parliament. On Monday, Chancellor Kurz coordinated with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. It is possible that the planned stations for the mass tests will also be retained for the vaccinations.
However, many Austrians fear that they will act as experiments for prematurely approved drugs. Health experts rule out this danger: The vaccines that are about to be approved would have gone through the normal process with tens of thousands of test persons. The procedures were accelerated by faster official channels: Even while the studies and tests were still underway, all evaluations and data were and are sent to the authorities and are continuously reviewed by EU experts.
According to the WHO, there are 48 vaccines in development, more than 10 in Phase 3:
- Biontech/Pfizer: 44,000 participants in Phase 3, efficacy: 95%, emergency approval in USA, EU pending.
- Moderna: 30,000 participants, efficacy: 94.5 percent, emergency approval in USA, in preparation.
- AstraZeneca: 90% efficacy, discussions with USA, EU and UK.
- Curevac: Phase 3 with 30,000 participants before start.
- Johnson&Johnson: Phase 3 with 60,000 subjects since end of September.
- Sinovac, Sinopharm, Gamaleya: broad testing in Asia and Russia.
USA: 24 hours after approval of the vaccines, immunization against corona is already planned in the USA. This ambitious plan was announced last week by Moncef Slaoui, head of the US government’s vaccine working group. According to media reports, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will meet between December 8 and 10 to decide on the approval of corona vaccines, at which time delivery to the vaccination centers will begin.
